“Dianetics: The Original Thesis” is a manuscript that pulled no punches and made the professors blush with its definitive and well weighted balance of scientifically clinical demarcation and intentionally educational commentary so even a layman could understand and apply it. It delineated and explained in plain gallant english the fundamentals of life. When I say life I mean 1. The condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally.

This newly restored and republished book covers the primary axioms, explanations and descriptions of the parts of the mind, capabilities of, how it functions and how further developments led to an easily workable technique.

“It’s not a grammar book”, Ms Truss claims in the first chapter and proceeds to explain: “The trouble with grammar books is that they are read by keen foreigners; meanwhile, native English-speakers who require their help are the last people who will make the effort to buy and read them.” Ironically, this review of her own book is written by yet another keen foreigner.

“Eats, Shoots & Leaves” is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. It’s full of jokes; true, but funny, stories; historical examples of how punctuation actually changed people’s lives in the past and genuine examples of misplaced punctuation marks accompanied by hilarious comments. Here and there a short funny poem or a quotation from a famous book saves the reader from being bored (“A cat has claws at the end of its paws. A comma’s a pause at the end of a clause.”).

All of it makes the book a very interesting read. Another impressive thing about the book is the passion, with which the author speaks about the main subject – English punctuation. The main purpose of the book is not to teach people to punctuate correctly (though the book does it), but to attract everyone’s attention to the deteriorating common usage of apostrophes, commas and semicolons. Lynne is doing her best to save English punctuation before it’s too late and there’s nothing more to save. “Why did the Apostrophe Protection Society not have a militant wing? Could I start one?”, she asks in the “Introduction”. And I must admit I sympathized with her feelings fully while reading the book for the first time, and now as I re-read it I still sympathize with her.

The book has given me a lot of useful tips presented in a lively, easy-to-understand manner. I might disagree with the author in some cases (for example, when she attacks emoticons, rather unfairly from my point of view), but I’m very grateful to her for writing this book and to Rosemary for sending it to me. It has helped me to rediscover the English language and given me quite a few minutes of true joy. I highly recommend it, especially if you are often in doubt whether to write “it’s” or “its”. Lynne explains the difference in such a way that you will never forget.

It’s a really special book.

To test the intellect of students and assign them accordingly has always made more sense to me than throwing them all in a class where learning levels vary so much. Teaching thirty-five students that have such far reaching aptitudes only creates a longer learning experience for the top “brains” while a teacher has to bring the lower students to a mid-level of learning at best. Testing and grouping by diagnostic skills should separate the math “whiz” from someone ably suited to carpentry; the top English or writing student from the electrical wizard, etc.

In my own schooling as I went through elementary and high school in the 1940′s through 1952, I often wished I was in a class where my strong subjects paired me with others of the same strengths. But it never occurred nor was even thought of as far as I know.

Yes Dr. Ussery, your method makes so much sense that it should be expanded from any school systems now using it to several others that have a different makeup of strengths and weaknesses. I feel it would not leave students behind that excelled in manual capacities and would expand the learning curve for those that have the ability in other fields.

The book as new is not cheap, even in second hand it can be pricey.

My personal experience of using this book has been nothing but positive through my years in university and after. Even now I still have it around and I know some engineer friends who refer to it.

The book caters to all level of abilities, starting off with the basic grounding pf algebra and then progressing at a good pace with many examples, so you are not at a loss unlike with some other books which skip steps.

It allows you to learn at your own pace and progress at your pace as well. What I found with this book is the progress of understanding the subject area creeps up on you and before you know it; you maybe ahead of your contemporaries and people will begin asking you for help more than you’d like to.

It is a great book which builds up your confidence and then powers you along. Using this book, the lowest I got in a Mathematics exam in university was 60%. That was my fault as I was late for the exam. I found that Mathematics was the easier part of the course – I was doing Electrical Engineering and Electronics.

The only problem with this book is that because it is a recommended book, you will have trouble getting it from the library as there will be people hoarding it or double booking it.

If you can buy your own or get a second hand from charity shops.

I highly recommend this book for anyone doing a technical course.

2) They’re incomplete. Even the best preserved scrolls have holes in them and are missing sections of text. The library of Dead Sea Scrolls looks like an unfinished jigsaw puzzle. Who knows what essential information is missing? Nonetheless, the texts we have hint at mind-boggling religious concepts.

3) There may be undiscovered scrolls still hiding out in the Holy Land. Scholars estimate as many as twenty of the caves at Qumran were lost, together with their contents, due to collapse. Being collapsed, these caves cannot be found unless excavated by accident. Caches of scrolls may exist elsewhere in the Holy Land, as well. However, Israel’s stranglehold on this flow of information has resulted in scholars leveling charges of academic and/or religious conspiracy.

4) Major interest groups don’t want you to know about them. But let’s face it: If someone tells you not to look at something, isn’t that the first thing you want to do? Well, many interest groups don’t want you to look, or at least, not too deeply. Visit the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibits, admire their preservation, appreciate their antiquity, but then move on to the Phoenician glass exhibit. Eisenman’s The Dead Sea Scrolls and the First Christians makes clear his lofty level of scholarship, while Baigent and Leigh’s The Dead Sea Scrolls Deception renders plausible the claim of a “conspiracy of consensus.” For several decades, scholars decried Israel’s delay in releasing the scrolls to the public; the work of these authors, among others, provides powerful evidence to support the theory of an academic scandal. Why were Israel’s authorities so slow to release the Dead Sea Scrolls? If you believe the revisionist scholars, Judaic and Trinitarian Christian authorities have good reason to fear the secrets of the scrolls.

5) The keepers of the scrolls were slaughtered after hiding them away in the caves. In essence, they died to preserve the scrolls. Sooo… they must have held the scrolls with slightly more reverence than, say, the scriptural equivalent of comic books, right? So what was so precious about the Dead Sea Scrolls – not to us, but to their keepers? Was there a deep, dark secret they were willing to die for? Or were the scrolls just that holy? Either way, we should want to know.

Erin taught English at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Erin’s students were the at-risk teenagers with many issues prevalent in the urban areas of most cities. She was able to breakdown their distrust of each other, establish a community to support each other and improve in their ability to learn.
